When turning on a light, I am less interested in the object it illuminates than the shadows it casts.
As a child, I used to stare into the dark of my room imagining ominous forms lurking in the inky spaces left by the moon. This fascination with shadow continues, and inspires my art today.
My work explores what is often hidden from our immediate gaze: the muted colours of a cloud, the hint of a collarbone. For me, the visual relationship between light and dark evokes the connection between our conscious and unconscious mind. Our visible selves offset by our dark desires and thoughts. Often obscured, the mysteries of self and form give structure and depth to my paintings. I enjoy exploring different subjects and yet I am always drawn back to shadows, and the feeling of something invisible and inexpressible lurking there.
